You might think your conversations with Claude are completely private, but recent reports show that some of these chats are popping up in Google and Bing search results. If you use the popular AI tool, here is what you need to know about how this happens and how you can keep your data safe.
How are chats ending up on Google? The main reason this is happening comes down to a specific sharing feature. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, lets you create public links to your chat threads so you can easily share them with others. Think of it like sharing a public document.
The problem starts when these links are posted on social media or public forums. Once a link is out in the open, search engines can find it and index the entire conversation. According to privacy advocates, the companies involved have not done a great job of warning people that sharing a link can quickly make the chat readable by anyone on the internet. Additionally, reports indicate that many of these shared pages lack the specific website code that tells search engines to stay away.
How to protect your privacy If you want to make sure your AI conversations stay between you and the chatbot, the best approach is to stop using the public link feature. Instead of creating a shareable link to show someone an AI response, just copy and paste the text you need or take a quick screenshot.
If you have already shared links in the past and want to remove them, you can easily unpublish those chats. Here is how to do it on the Claude desktop app:

Click your profile icon in the bottom left corner and select Settings.

From there, you can permanently delete any public threads.
